NEW YORK, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Mark Teixeira drove in three runs Wednesday and the New York Yankees took advantage of a key second-inning error to edge Oakland 4-3.
New York won its fifth in a row and stayed a game in front of second-place Tampa Bay in the American League East. The Rays defeated Toronto Wednesday.
Teixeira doubled home Derek Jeter in the first and finished off a three-run second with a two-run single.
The second inning was kept alive, however, when pitcher Brett Anderson booted a grounder back to the mound by Jeter. That miscue made all three runs in the frame unearned.
A.J. Burnett (10-12) gave up three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts in six innings to get the win. He had gone 0-4 in his previous five starts.
Mariano Rivera came on in the ninth to protect the one-run lead and gave up a two-out single to Daric Barton, who then stole second. Rivera, however, struck out Kurt Suzuki at the end of a nine-pitch at bat to pick up his 28th save.
Anderson (3-6) gave up four runs on eight hits in six innings.
