JERUSALEM, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- The parents of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit said they were disappointed after meeting with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to discuss their son's plight.
"It has been eight months since anything besides talks has happened. Today there are no negotiations with Hamas, there is no pressure being applied, and unfortunately we also don't have any bargaining chips," Noam Shalit said Monday, Haaretz reported.
Shalit's son, an Israeli soldier, was captured by Hamas in a cros-border raid and has been held incommunicado in Gaza since 2006.
Netanyahu met with Noam and Aviva Shalit and tried to persuade them to leave the protest tent outside the prime minister's Jerusalem residence and return to their home for the Jewish New Year, the newspaper said.
"I understand that you plan to remain at the protest tent over Rosh Hashana, but we suggest that you celebrate the holiday at your home, to gain strength, and return to the protest tent after the holiday," Netanyahu reportedly told the couple.
"We know that you traveled a short distance today from the tent, but we hope that our next meeting will be at your home in the Galilee, together with Gilad,"the newspaper quoted Netanyahu as saying.
After ending a nationwide walkathon two months ago to raise awareness for their son's plight, the soldier's parents moved to a protest tent located outside the prime minister's Jerusalem residence, where they vowed to remain until their son is set free.
"Gilad, too, can't take a break from captivity, we must bring him back before there is no one left to bring back," Noam Shalit said.
