Former soldier held in hostage standoff     (World News)

SAVANNAH, Ga., Sept. 6 (UPI) -- A former soldier was in custody after an early-morning hostage-taking incident Monday at a Fort Stewart, Ga., military hospital, an Army spokesman says.

"He's in custody. No shots were fired. There were no injuries," WTOC-TV, Savannah, Ga., quoted Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Phillips as saying.

About 4 a.m. Monday the veteran, whose name had not been released, entered the emergency room of Winn Army Community Hospital carrying a .38-caliber revolver, a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, a semiautomatic .223-caliber AR-15 rifle and a .22-version semiautomatic MP5 submachine gun.

"He said he was frustrated with his medical care and ultimately took a hostage and made his way to the behavioral health area on the third floor," Phillips said. "On the way he collected two more hostages."

One of the hostages was a psychiatric nurse who calmed the man down, paving the way for criminal negotiators who talked the veteran into disarming himself and surrendering, WTOC-TV reported.
